Samsung seem to be intent on flooding the market with touchscreen phones and here we have yet another – the Omnia LITE B3700.

Essentially a cut-down version of the Omnia 2 , the Omnia LITE still offers a decent range of smart phone features.

As a mid range Windows phone, the Omnia LITE sits in the same price bracket as the LG GM750 andSony Ericsson Satio , but is distinguished from them as being a decidedly straight laced option.

The question is can a Windows smart phone still compete at a time when mobile manufacturers are coming up with hot operating systems like Apple’s oft-duplicated OS, as well as fresh offerings from Palm and Nokia?

We gave it a thorough testing to find out…

Design and Specification

From the outside the Omnia LITE’s pared back form might be a little conservative for some tastes, but combined with the high build quality that we’ve come to expect from Samsung, this handset does have an air of class.

Besides, looks aren’t everything and with a 667 Mhz brain the Omnia LITE is a fairly sharp smart phone. The B3700 runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 (upgradeable to 6.5) so you get a full complement of Microsoft Office applications from Word to Powerpoint, all promising to make working on the move that much easier.

The Omnia LITE also boasts a large bright 3″ TFT resistive touch screen (which is supposed to be less sensitive, but more accurate than a capacitive screen) and a stylus is bundled for operation.

Wait, what? A stylus?

To be fair, some applications on the Omnia LITE (Excel especially) require pin-point precision. But since the screen isn’t fun with fingers, you end up having to use the stylus for everything. Intuitive, this is not.

Nice to see a micro USB port though- these are increasingly becoming the standard connection for charging mobile phones.

That said, the battery life on the Omnia LITE is decent, managing four days with occasional internet use and email.

Connectivity

The Omnia LITE has HSDPA enabled 3G (read as 3.5G) and Wi-Fi, so even if you’re not in a hotspot, getting on the internet isn’t too hard.

Meanwhile push email makes getting your messages and downloading attachments a cinch.

The LITE also comes with a variety of widgets – everything from Facebook, Youtube, and MSN to stock market apps – so you can get up and running as soon as you get it out of the box and everything is nicely optimized using the Opera browser.

Bluetooth v.2.0 then makes wireless transfers a doddle and connections are nicely visualized.

Media

On board the B7300 packs a decent 3.15 megpaixel camera. Now we’ve heard a couple of moans about this one, but we found the results to be great (see below)!

Remember: Megapixels don’t equal quality, so just because it’s ‘only’ 3 megapixels, it doesn’t detract from the fact that the OmniaLITE’s camera takes more than decent pictures.
It also boasts a panoramic mode – great for breathtaking holiday snaps. Or in this case, the view from the office window…

Crucially, there is no flash so no night time party snaps with the OmniaLITE, neither is there a 3.5mm jack – so you’ll just have to make do with the proprietary headphones.

Verdict:

After about a week we were just about beginning to enjoy using the Omnia LITE – making calls was fine, emails were coming through quickly, browsing was fair and we were taking some nice snaps.
But then Windows started being well, Windows, and so we were suddenly reminded why so many people jumped ship. Erratic performance, unexplained crashes and error messages abound, and we began to reassess our opinion of the handset…
On paper the Omnia LITE offers decent connectivity, organizational tools and classical looks, but whilst the LITE’s features and performance have been pared down, this doesn’t seem to be reflected in the price: we found Omnia 2 deals for significantly less.

The Taiwan-based High Tech Computer Corporation, better known as HTC in the mobile phone community, enjoys the distinction of being the world’s leader in smartphones outside of the Symbian OS currently dominated by Nokia.

But primarily because its main platform of choice ever since it started making and marketing smartphones has been Microsoft’s Windows Mobile, it can be more accurate to say that HTC is the largest smartphone maker using Windows.  But late in 2009, HTC has began shifting its OS of choice to the more capable Android platform which has seen remarkable growth in its first year since being introduced in the late 2008.

A Debt of Gratitude to Windows

<p>It’s no secret that the phenomenal rise of HTC from a relative unknown to a most sought after brand in smartphones largely began after Microsoft officially chose the company as its hardware development platform for showcasing its Windows Mobile operating system based on the Windows CE.

HTC is proud to have a heritage of world’s first releases which has cemented its reputation as being in the forefront of cutting-edge technical innovation.  It’s quite understandable that as the development test bed for Microsoft’s mobile phone initiatives, HTC would enjoy a string of firsts.

It was HTC that launched the world’s first smartphone powered by Windows in 2002 and the world’s first smartphone with music playback features in 2004. HTC again landed as the world’s first Windows smartphones with 3G in 2005 and the first in tri band UMTS 3G a year later.  Needless to say, HTC was always first in releasing smartphones running the latest Windows Mobile version updates.

Even before going into smartphones, HTC has been using MS for the world’s first Pocket PC launched in 2000, three years after the company was founded.   It had marketed the world’s first palm sized PC with color display back in 1999 but without MS yet.

But its fame really shot up quite quickly starting in 2005 when HTC released the most powerful set of smartphones running the Windows Mobile 5.0 that had been immensely improved from its lackluster predecessor.

As a result, HTC’s sales revenue doubled to $2.2 billion in 2005 from its previous year and was listed as the fastest growing technology company in Business Week’s Info Tech 100.  This was followed in early 2007 with a landmark device that redefined what a smartphone can do with the first HTC Advantage.

Its groundbreaking form factor included a 5-inch display with detachable full-QWERTY keyboard. Its revolutionary design incorporated just about everything the mobile executive need starting from a powerful 624 MHz processor with a dedicated ATI graphics accelerator to the fun features considered frills but have become standard on many smartphones like a 3.2 megapixel camera which was upscale at that time and multimedia players.

A Brighter Future

The emergence of Google’s Android was quickly taken by HTC gurus as the way to go for its future and promptly partnered with Google to produce its first Android smartphone in the Nexus One released early 2010.  With Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro on the decline foreshadowed by the upcoming but still uncertain Windows Phone 7, HTC has diversified with Android as its alternative platform with the HTC Magic in 2009 as well as BREW in the HTC Smart for 2010. As an OEM, it gave T-Mobile and the world the first Android smartphone in 2008 with the T-Mobile G1 (rebranded from HTC Dream).

Basically, windows mobile is a compact operating system which incorporates a set of basic applications for mobile devices. This is based on the Microsoft Win32 API. The devices that run windows mobile include Pocket PCs, Smart phones, Portable Media Centers, and on-board computers for certain automobiles. It is designed to be somewhat similar to desktop versions of Windows, both feature-wise and aesthetically.

Originally, it appeared as the Pocket PC 2000 operating system. However, Windows Mobile has been updated numerous times. The current estimates state suggest that 80% of the 50 million Windows Mobile devices made have been built by one contract manufacturing group, HTC, which makes handsets as for several major companies under their brands, as well as under its own brand. In February 2009, Microsoft signed a deal with the third largest mobile phone maker, LG Electronics, to license Windows Mobile on 50 upcoming LG smartphone models.

At the Mobile World Congress on February 15th, Steve Ballmer announced a new strategy for Microsoft® Operating Systems on mobile handheld devices: Windows® Phone 7 Series (WP7).  With this announcement Microsoft clearly has distinguished their OS solution offerings between consumer/enterprise and industrial/commercial markets and has raised the bar for the competition.

Microsoft needed to do this  

According to comScore®, Microsofts share of the smart phone market fell over 20% from September 2009 through February 2010.  Not a good position for Microsoft in a growing market segment.

This new OS is targeted only (and strictly) at the consumer market, no industrial or cross bred platforms need apply.   Microsoft has done its homework and taken cues from what has worked: Apps, Marketplace, Multimedia (Zune™), and Multi-Touch user input.  They also have learned what does not work: Operating System “ish” User Interfaces, incompatible hardware and applications, short battery life, and high priced development tools.

What happens now to Windows Mobile®?

Windows Mobile 6.5 has been renamed Windows Phone Classic, and is still based upon CE 5.  And that is probably where it ends.  Microsoft has stated that Mobile applications will not run on WP7.  This means that developers now have a few decisions to make: do we stay with a dead-end OS?  And, what market am I really in?  If you are in a consumer market: WP7 (or iPhone®, Android„¢ or BlackBerry®) are probably the way to go.  If you require a rugged device, specific peripherals, sunlight readable displays, long lifecycles, gloved operation, custom keys, true cameras, and/or a specific user experience: CE is the clear choice in the market.  Windows Phone Classic (aka Mobile) will still likely be sold by Microsoft through some vertical market vendors for the near future, but in terms of improvements, it is likely at its end.  

R.I.P. Mobile 2010

Until now, Microsoft has stated (well, whispered…) that Mobile is a consumer oriented OS and CE is designed for vertical/industrial markets.  In practice Microsoft has allowed the blurring of the line by offering the Mobile OS to vertical market providers (albeit with some key licensing requirements).  By enabling this perceived indifference, Microsoft has confused the marketplace.  I can’t recall how many of our client partners have told me that “CE will shortly be obsolete and replaced by Mobile” or “we chose Mobile because it is newer and more intuitive than CE”.  Both of these were clearly not the direct intent of Microsoft, but the confusion by a lack of clear differentiation is evident

Moving On

Microsoft now has a clear strategy for consumer and industrial products.  If you have not seen the demonstrations of the prototypes of WP7, I recommend you do so, you can start at the WP7 site: www.windowsphone7series.com.  The “Metro” GUI with its tiles, marketplace, and Zune multimedia experience looks like a real winner for the smart phone market.  Microsoft has really done its homework.

In evaluating your OS choice for development and the marketing of your solution, you must consider what Microsoft’s objectives are for their WP7 and CE products and ultimately how they will align with your market needs.   

Microsoft has strategically restricted (they would say focused) the WP7 hardware platform with things such as a fixed memory model, capacitive touch panel (can’t use gloves or a stylus) and only two choices of screen resolutions (320×480 and 480×800).   They have stated that no upgrade path exists for any hardware currently manufactured by anyone (so much for the capital return on Mobile hardware).  Microsoft has chosen to deadhead Mobile applications by stating that they will not run on WP7 .  In reaction to this, key applications providers such as Adobe® and Skype™ (among others) have cancelled their developments for WM6.5 in favor of waiting until WP7 is released.  

CE 6 clearly addresses the industrial market, especially with Release 3 now offering Silverlight®, Pan and Zoom Internet Explorer, Flash Lite, and other development enhancements.  These enhancements give the developer an excellent user experience paradigm which allows for rich, modern, user interfaces and large data set sizes to work with and allow OEM providers, such as Two Technologies, to offer reliable, robust and extensible platforms for our clients.

I applaud Microsoft for this clear, bold move in announcing Windows Phone 7 Series.  This action will continue to spur on innovation and development in the consumer and enterprise markets.  With CE 6 R3 Microsoft offers a best-in-class operating system with leading edge development tools for the industrial and commercial marketplaces.

Design

For better or worse, the iPod Touch is clearly the iPhone’s baby brother. Like most products that roll out of Apple, the Touch shows the love of committed designers, hardware engineers, and usability experts. The Touch measures a slim and pocketable 4.3 inches by 2.4 inches by 0.31 inch, with an all-metal-and-glass design that feels as expensive as it looks. It’s no surprise that Apple has been on a screaming rampage of success with its gorgeous, high tech products these last few years. Every new release seems to cast a heavy shadow over its predecessor. This is certainly the case with the new iPod touch. The improvements over earlier designs – bigger, better LCD, touch screen controls, thinner frame, Wi-Fi access, etc. – are dramatic leaps forward, not only for the iPod itself but for future Apple products. The 16GB iPod touch, selling for $399 USD ($299 USD for the 8GB version), has all the signs of a permanent, monumental success. As with other iPods, the touch lacks a user-replaceable battery, a memory expansion port, and stereo Bluetooth (a shame in such a mediacentric device), but with such an artful design and excellent performance, those are forgivable flaws. Great, but isn’t £279 a lot of cash to spend on a 16GB media player? Wouldn’t you be better off with an iPod Classic? Well, there’s not much in terms of raw specifications to distinguish it from the rest of the iPod range. You get the usual limited range of music file format support – just AAC, Apple Lossless and MP3 for music and H.264 and MPEG4 files for video. There’s no FLAC, Ogg Vorbis or WMA support, nor any for DivX or WMV, MPEG1 or 2. Although very beautifully designed and fantastically thin at just 8mm, its pocket footprint is actually a little larger than a standard iPod, measuring 62mm wide by 110mm tall. And battery life is nothing to write home about either, weighing in at up to 22 hours for audio and a par-score five hours for video.

Edsel. New Coke. Apple Ipod? Reviews of Apple’s much-hyped new gizmo have suggested that this just might be one of the most hated products in American history, just like the car Edsel (named after a draft-dodging member of the Ford family) and New Coke (which tasted just like Pepsi). However hated, the iPhone has still made an incredible amount of money for Apple. Apparently, people are curious about just how bad a cell phone can be.

Does It Blend Well With Others?

One of the most popular viral videos since the iPhone’s much-hyped 2007 release is that of a blender seller sticking in an iPhone and turning on the machine. This was to show off the strength of the blender, but also seemed to be a more than cutting Apple iPhone review by the blender seller. The fact that the video went viral and became so popular (more so than the blender it sells, the Blendtec) means that many others seemed to agree with this particular Apple iPhone review.

Sorry, Steve Jobs

Although you could go to a high tech website such as CNet.com to read geek’s Apple iPhone reviews, they sometimes are a bit difficult to understand with all of the jargon and techno-babble. If you want to know what an iPhone is like, you need to read Apple iPhone reviews written by the average person. You can find them practically anywhere online by just typing “Apple iPhone review” into your favorite search engine.

This review can be found on Helium.com written by Cara Volle. It begins, “Sorry, Steve Jobs, but I hate your effing iPhone…”  That’s about all I can reprint here. Although not exactly Pulitzer Prize winning material, that does give you an indication about how good a gizmo an iPhone is.

Complaints about the iPhone from others have ranged from its choice of AT&T as network provider to the cost. The picture quality of its camera is said to be pretty disappointing and streamlining video still has a lot of bugs to work out. There’s also a disturbing trend for the iPhone to get physically very hot when in use. Computer security specialists have also found ways to hack into an iPhone – and if they can do it, so can cyber criminals.

Whenever a new techie toy appears, there are bound to be bugs that only customers can find. You need to wait for at least a year after their release for these bugs to be resolved somehow.

I think apple has gone a long way to push us toward the future in making the iPhone The iPod and many other things as mac. see if steve jobs didn’t decide to branch of from the pc world we wouldn’t have these cool fun gadgets. so on to the review.. the ipod touch 3g 32 gig is a really nice device even with iOS4. i love the backgrounding that you can do and the new interface looks like. if you look at the first iPod touch and look at todays iPod this is really a push because so many things has changed from the black background to the changeable one to not backgrounding for you to be able to. i really love these apple products. so when if you do get a chance to the iPod 3g get it is the best mp3 player and gaming player to me because theres so many apps. so thats my reason to get the new iPod touch.
