The biggest sporting event in the world is about to begin and most in the USA are uninformed about soccer. This article will provide a brief introduction to soccer, rules of the game, structure of the World Cup, odds-on-favorites and authentic underdogs that will participate in the FIFA World Cup.

Welcome to Soccer 101. As the FIFA World Cup, the most popular and fervently followed sporting event in the world approaches, many are anticipating that the world’s largest tournament will be successful in increasing the sport’s fan base. In the past, most people in the USA have had little to no knowledge or interest in this huge event. In recent years, there has been a shift in “American” thinking, and soccer is starting to become more popular. The event that clearly defines this sport, the World Cup, is to be held in Germany starting June 9th and will reach its climax on July the 9th with the crowning of a World Championship team.

The word “soccer” is actually only used in the United States and Great Britain, where it has its origins. The rest of the world simply calls it “football”. The term ‘soccer’ is actually an abbreviation derived from “Association Football”, an organization formed in London in 1863. Originally called the Football Association, it was formed to standardize the rules for the game. One of the early compelling rule changes established by this association was that the ball could not be carried, or touched by the hand, except by the goalie. At the time, many enthusiasts and players were leaning toward morphing the sport into something similar to rugby or American football. This caused a rift in the two schools of thought and the rugby oriented clubs departed from the association soon after. The organization then coined the name Association Football to make a distinction between the two sports. In 1889, the abbreviated form “socca” started to be used. Eventually, in 1895, the spelling was changed to “soccer.” The origin of soccer, according to historians, is not nearly as clearly defined as the origin of the name.

The earliest known game similar to soccer was played in China during the Ts’in Dynasty (255 BC-206 BC). A game played with an animal skin ball and thirty-foot high posts connecting a net to form a goal, “tsu chu”, as it was known, was used to train soldiers. It is also documented that it was played as a form of celebration for events surrounding royalty. In ancient Near-East countries such as Egypt, a version of the game was played as a form of fertility rites. The American Indians and the Eskimos also had versions of a game similar to soccer. One legend documents a contest between two villages in Alaska with goals set up ten miles apart in a game called aqsaqtuk.

A Native American legend depicts the game played on the beach with goals a mile apart and players wearing disguises. Trying to distinguish between teammates and opponents was a part of the strategy in this game called pasuckuakohowog. Legends surrounding the game that describe using a conquered enemy’s skull as the soccer ball are found as early as the fifth century in England.

Now that you know a little bit of history of soccer, here is a quick look at the basic rules:

No Hands allowed – Only the goalie can use his hands in defense of the goal. This doesn’t apply to throw-ins. FIFA defines the hand as “Any part of the body from the tips of the fingers to the shoulder”. The goalie also cannot use his hands if the ball is passed directly from his teammate.

Fouls – A player cannot hold, kick, trip, charge, jump at, strike, push, or spit at or on an opponent. Fouls are called at the umpires’ discretion, making distinctions between incidental and deliberate contact. These are frequently called when the shoulders, arms or hands are used in an offensive way toward an opponent.

Direct and Indirect Free Kicks – A direct kick is one by which you can score by kicking the ball directly into the goal. An indirect kick is one by which you cannot score with directly. It may, however, be assisted toward the goal by another player. A direct kick comes from a contact foul or “hand” infraction. All other fouls result in an indirect kick.

Throw-ins – When the ball goes out of bounds on the sidelines a throw-in is taken by the closest offensive player. In this instance, use of the hands is allowed. Both feet must be on the ground and the ball is thrown in with both hands over the head.

Goal Kicks / Corner Kicks – Corner kicks or goal kicks are taken when the ball leaves the field across the end-line. If the offensive team was the last to touch the ball, it is a turnover and a goal kick is taken. If the defensive team was the last to touch the ball, a corner kick is taken.

Yellow and Red Cards – A yellow card is given as a warning, a red card is an ejection of a player. Two yellow cards equal one red card. If a player is given two successive yellow cards or a red card, they must leave the game and the team plays a man short.

Two-touch Rule – No player can touch the ball twice successively when putting the ball into play. This rule applies to throw-ins as well. A player cannot throw in and then kick the ball.

Penalty Kick – As a direct-kick foul, a penalty kick results from a contact infraction or hand foul by the defending team within the penalty box area. The kick is taken from the penalty box arc, which is 12 yards in front of the goal. All offensive players must be outside of the penalty box when the kick is struck. The goalie must have both feet planted at the goal line until the ball is struck.

Offside – If a player is closer to the opponents goal than to the ball or ahead of the ball with no defender between him and the goal, offside is called only if that player is involved in some type of offense activity as determined by the referee. This doesn’t apply to a goal kick, corner kick, or throw-in. It also doesn’t apply to a player on his “own half” of the field. You can’t be offside if you are standing on your half of the field. Also, the offside rule applies only when the ball is kicked, not when the player receives the ball.

To understand this better go to the FIFA Laws of the Game. Keep in mind that the FIFA International soccer competition rules are immensely complex. Even when viewed in brief, the “Laws of the Game” are not simple. They can be confusing and difficult to understand. The FIFA World Cup has held 17 tournaments. Oddly enough, there have been only seven different nations that have won the championship. Spanning the entire history of the tournament, here are the winners: Brazil 5, Italy 3, Germany 3, Argentina 2, Uruguay 2, England 1 and France 1. Amazingly, six of these wins at the World Cup were by the host country. This would indicate that the host nation has a distinct advantage. There have been some notable upsets along the way however. The underdog USA team of 1950 defeated a highly touted English team. North Korea beat Italy in 1966 and Cameroon won over Argentina, a super power in the sport, in 1990. If you are looking to lay down a bet on the World Cup, historical and tournament structural facts are important to consider.

The structure of the tournament can be one of the things to look closely at when trying to decide who is the favorite. For 2006, Brazil and Japan, who are equally matched, are in the same pool. That makes it tough to predict who will survive that grouping. Head-to-head match-ups are not the only thing to consider. Fatigue comes into play when evenly talented opponents meet in an early round. So you have to consider that even if Brazil is victorious early on, will they still have the stamina to go the distance? There is also some luck involved in the structure of the final groupings. The top 8 teams are separated as #1 seeds for groups A through H. Germany and Brazil get their free pass as top seeds because they are respectively the host nation and the previous champion. The remaining clubs are simply drawn at random from a bowl.

The pools for the World Cup have been chosen and their seeding in descending order looks like this:

Group A; Germany, Costa Rica, Poland, Ecuador

Group B; England, Paraguay, Trinidad-Tobago, Sweden

Group C; Argentina, Ivory Coast, Serbia-Montenegro, Netherlands

Group D; Mexico, Iran, Angola, Portugal

Group E; Italy, Ghana, United States, Czech Republic

Group F; Brazil, Croatia, Australia, Japan

Group G; France, Switzerland, South Korea, Togo

Group H; Spain, Ukraine, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia

Group A: Germany is a very tough opponent, and they are on their home field, which makes them scary. However, Poland has a legitimate shot at making the finals. Group B: It is important to note that Sweden has not lost to England in 37 years. Group E: The Italians are a good team but overall this group is too evenly matched to call. The United States has as much a chance as anyone in this division. Group C: The two toughest powerhouse teams in one single group are Argentina and the Netherlands. One of these two will no doubt emerge victorious.

The Underdogs: Trinidad-Tobago will pay big (~1000/1 to win), but can they make it past the first round? Portugal (~22/1), Sweden and Mexico (~40/1) and the Ukraine (~50/1) will also provide a big payoff if they win.

The very first black movies were mostly race films, produced in the beginning parts of the twentieth century. These films were made up of mainly black cast and were produced with the black audience in mind; with the objective being to create a more accurate portrayal of black people than that seen in early white films. The most prominent producer of the black film was Oscar Micheaux.

Oscar formed his own film production company and between 1919 and 1948 independently released over forty black movies. Oscar’s first black film was the 1919 silent film “The Homesteader,” this was the first feature-length production made for and created with a black cast and crew. Oscar’s next film “Within Our Gates,” directly addressed racism and depicted lynching. Both starred well known black actress Evelyn Peer.

In 1929, MGM became the first major studio to release an all black film, with the release of “Hallelujah!” The MGM produced musical was notable for its attempt to create a more positive portrayal of black life, than contemporary while films of the time. There were two notable black musicals films released in 1943 each featuring actress Lena Horne, “Stormy Weather” and “Cabin in the Sky”.”

Black movies allowed black actors and musicians a chance to play starring roles instead of being relegated to supporting roles as domestic characters in mainstream films. In Hollywood’s’ early days, it was not uncommon for white actors to appear in black face and carry off stereotyped portrayals of blacks. Actress Hattie McDaniel became the first black person to win a best supporting Oscar, for playing a housemaid in the 1939 production of “Gone with the Wind.”

The Civil Rights struggle of the 50s and 60s paved the way for a change in black movies, by addressing racial tensions and depicting accurate black experiences. White actors and Black actors now star together in movies thus reaching a larger audience. Leading black actor Sidney Poitier won a best acting Oscar for the 1963 film, “Lilies of the Field.” Dorothy Dandridge was the first black woman to receive a best actress Oscar nomination for her role in the all black musical, “Carmen Jones.”

The 1970s brought Blaxploitation black films such as “Shaft” starring Richard Roundtree and “Foxy Brown” starring Pam Grier to the big screen. Black comedians have benefited significantly from the increased exposure of black movies. In 1976, one of the top black actors – Richard Pryor stared in various successful movie projects including “Car Wash”.

In more recent times, starting from about the 1980s and 1990s, black actors were now able to become major movie stars and earn a lot more money. Eddie Murphy was the main star in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise while Danny Glover co-starred in the Lethal Weapon series of movies. Denzel Washington was the leading black actor of the day and won a best supporting actor Oscar for starring in the black film Glory, in 1989. Influential directors: Spike Lee, Mario Van Peebles and John Singleton all left their mark. Black films covering science fiction, fantasy, romance, hip hop culture and other genres gave black actors more freedom than ever before.

Oscar wins by Halle Berry and Jamie Foxx further show appreciation for black movies and black actors/actresses in the 21st century. Black film makers such as Tyler Perry continue the tradition of the black film with primarily black cast. However, major films feature an ethnically diverse casts offers the most opportunity for black actors and a chance to play other roles that are not the typical stereotype roles.

After facing numerous rejections from the major movie studios, Black directors, writers, producers and actors are creating their own production companies to promote and green light their own black movies, they are building Web sites, and turning to social networking and black film festivals as a way to network and gain exposure for black films.

“Given the downtrend in box office figures, Hollywood producers should stand up and notice that most Americans don’t want to see nudity in American movies,” says Bob Cefail, Chairman of In Touch Media Group, Inc. As evidence, Cefail cites a recently released national study of U.S. moviegoers (”National Research Study Reveals That Most Americans Don’t Want Nudity In The Movies They Watch,” www.pressdirectinternational.org).

In that study, which was 200 percent larger than typical national polls, In Touch Media Group found that Americans clearly give a thumbs down to onscreen nudity. “The public votes with its dollars, and the entertainment industry needs to take into account what the public wants,” notes Cefail, He adds that this concern should extend beyond the big screen. “Home entertainment systems and home multimedia systems are now competing with movie theaters for consumers’ time, attention, and money. Hollywood needs to get it right the first time, and provide moviegoers with the content they want.”

In Touch Media Group’s national study – and Cefail’s recommendations – echo the findings of other surveys. The Dove Foundation, for example, found that 93 percent of respondents wanted to see more wholesome family entertainment and that 84 percent would make an effort to watch and support family entertainment. Further, 77 percent said that fully three-quarters of the entertainment available today does not reflect or reinforce the values that are important to them.

During In Touch Media Group’s study, which encompassed 22 questions that led respondents to design their own movies, a distaste for nudity in films became apparent. “It’s important that our research be carefully considered by the entertainment industry,” concludes Cefail. “It appears that Americans are both averting their eyes and diverting their dollars when it comes to movies that incorporate nudity.”

It is widely known, to the detriment of many capable african american and black women owned business that there exists a concrete ceiling that is difficult to shatter.  That coupled with the glass ceiling effect that many women in general have encountered, throw in race and gender, a Black business woman might as well have a quadruple by-pass surgery and call it a day.

Barriers facing African-American women in business include and are not limited to negative, race-based stereotypes, more frequent questioning of their credibility and authority; and a lack of institutional support. Experiencing a “double outsider” status -African-American business women report exclusion from informal networks, and conflicted relationships with white women, among the challenges they face.  These results beg the question is there any use in trying to break through the ceilings?

Well if recent events, that being the election of the first American-American president and the First black lady are not enough to persuade you that “yes you can” then perhaps there is no reason for you to venture. The real issue is a lack of focus and strategy.

To help you rise up to the occasion and claim your birth right and focus on living a more fulfilled life, career, and business goals, I have created a simple system, which I call  “9 Pillars To A More Fulfilled You.” Here are the 10 key tips:

1. Honey, Child You Gotts To Let It Go: I have always loved that song by Toni Braxton, herself Black woman and astute woman entrepreneur herself, Let It Flow.  You cannot possibly begin to receive the good that before you if you are still hanging on to the pains and fears of yesterday.  The day has finally come  for the fulifilment of this prophecy “I have a dream that one day our children will not be judged by the color or their skin but by the content of their character! Pastor, Dr. Martin Luther King.  I recommend that you make the
song let it flow your anthem!

2. Find a mentor/coach: Numerous studies, both private and government funded have been conducted to understand the barriers facing women and minority owned businesses The most common recommendation that has been made in favor of the up ward mobility of African-American women is the need, the inclusion and  the establishment of mentoring programs and mentorship.  The game is often won before you get onto the field,  If you are going to play the game you had better find on your side a really savvy business coach and consultant

3. Become A Visionary: Now we all know black folk go to church, I also know that you will be very familiar with this phrase, Where there is no vision, the people perish.  In other words what are you looking to get done at the end of the day?  Quit your job? Retire your husband? Spend more time with your children? Paint? Learn to cook?  Long walks on the beach?  What do you value the most?  What is it that you most desire?

4. Create a 90-day plan: With recent vision boards craze, I encounter many heart-broken people who wonder why they have been able to materialize their dreams of MacMansions, bling and whips!  It is very simple A goal not written is merely a wish.  A goal without a plan is a ticking time bomb.  It spells nothing but failure. Make a list of the life areas you want to work on such as: spiritual, physical, financial, career, relationships, etc. Next, write out your goals for each area. Then, put your goals into a 90-day plan. Planning in 90-day cycles will help you accomplish twice as much in half the time.

5. Make it Your Business to Be in the Know- Read a book: Another major obstacle to the advancement of  the black woman owned business is Limited Access to Critical Information and Business Networks, when you don’t have the right information, it is difficult to compete. You are as successful as the last book you read.  It is very important you become very selective about the material you allow yourself to absorb.  Just like it is true that you are what you eat, As a [woman] thinketh, so is [s]he.  My people perish for lack of knowledge.  As the risk of beating a dead horse, knowledge is power!

6. Get A Website:  Bill Gates, you know the owner of Micro-Soft and 3rd richest man in the world?  He says “there are two types of businesses, those with websites and those that are out of business!  Studies show that about 75% of people go online to find out more about you and your product.  The preferred site to do this is Google.  Of these 50% of these people will purchase a product from you online, but only if you have online presence!

7. Track your results: Those that loose weight and keep it off the longest are those that keep a record of their activities.  You see it is very difficult to know where you are headed if you haven’t a clue where you came from.  It is also easy to beat yourself up when you don’t have proof of how far you have come or how well you are doing.  Journals are highly recommended, track progress, document every little success.  You see success is nothing but a series of compounding events with a big pay off, Compound interest anyone?

8. Pace yourself: Success is not a destination but a journey.  Multi-tasking is so 2008!  Stop and smell the roses and remember it is not a race to the finish line

9. Take time for you:  You know Bono of U2 sang it best when he crooned

Women we are the worst at this be they stay at home moms, professional business women and/or small business owners. At the end of the day we have given it all with nothing left for yourself.  Is it a wonder you have no energy left to make the changes that will bring you happiness? Even Jesus Christ, Buddha, Mohammed took a time out.  What is it that the Bible say? 6 days He created the earth on the seventh day He rested?  Half an hour a day to yourself for 15 minutes deep breathing is a must and 15 just to enjoy the silence.

10. Reward yourself: On a weekly basis, review the progress that you are making on your goals. With every accomplishment take time to recognize your achievement and pop in Kool & The Gang

You must get into the habit of seeing the good you have to offer.  Women of color are just not very aware of what they capable of today.  Bring out the inner Harriet Tubman in you, The Rosa parks and The “Madam C.J.” Walker.  You have a rich history and heritage.  Those women fought long and hard for such a time as this and you get to live do them justice, do yourself justice.  Get it together and bring it back to me!

If you were to write down the names of all the bands and artists that exist or existed in America, you would probably take a lifetime and yet not be able to get them all. There are just so many! Being a member of a band or being an artist is something almost everyone has tried to be. The success of American Idol has already proved that this point is true.

Usually bands and artists are differentiated depending on the kind of music they make. So we have rock bands, pop bands, ‘boy’ bands, surf bands, punk band, and even the wedding bands are qualified as bands. Same when it comes to artists. It is interesting to note that when you think of bands, it’s not so much about the members that you think of but the music. The band or the artist is just a representation of the music that we enjoy. The music is always inside us. The bands and artists just sing it for us.

Different types of bands and artists not only make different kinds of music, but they also make music differently. Depending on how the members sing and what kind of instruments they play as well as what kind of music they like, the final product (song) that a band makes will be unique and one of its kind. The most interesting thing about bands is that although each member has a unique voice, this is very hard to identify in the song. A song by a band always seems to have just one voice, as if sung only by one person. The truth is that the song is sung by different voices, all at different pitches. But a good band has the ability to make different voices sound like one voice. This is when a band can harmonize.

This can at times also creatively inhibit a band, since the song must be liked by each member before it is made. This is difficult since everyone has varying preferences and when it comes to music, most people (singers included) cannot define why exactly they like a song. A band sometimes makes multiple songs, one after the other before they finally pick one song which they all will like. One might think of this as a compromise of an individual’s preference, but then that is in the nature of the band. A band is a whole and individual members are only parts. Thus the identity of the band is always stronger than that of its members.

Bands and artists have it differently when it comes to making music. Artists are free to experiment since they are independent of any other person’s preferences. Their likes and opinion are all that matter. This desire to be free and make exactly the kind of music that one wishes is what often drives band members to have solo careers or albums sooner or later. (As an artist it is very hard to keep your music inside you for very long). Yet many bands have lasted very long. This is because over a period of time members begin to make the ‘band’s music. They are able to relate better to their music as a band and also find a way to keep their individual tastes alive while blending them with the band’s music. Different voices, yet one sound. Delegation dysfunction plagues most small businesses.

Here’s how it works: You give something to someone else to do. They put it on the bottom of their pile. You check on it and discover that it’s not done. You press them on it, and it finally gets done (with rolled eyes and cold stares).

But it’s not done right and you end up doing it yourself. That is the definition of dysfunction!

“Getting things done through others is a fundamental leadership skill. Indeed, if you can’t do it, you’re not leading,” declares Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan in Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done.

FOUR ESSENTIALS FOR GETTING THINGS DONE THROUGH OTHERS

In spite of this dysfunction, delegation actually does work. More importantly delegation MUST work or we’re doomed to doing everything ourselves. Here’s what it takes to get things done through others:

1. Clearly identify the jobs that need doing

Effective delegation starts with knowing what needs to be done. As obvious as that statement sounds, it is where most businesses fail. Strong dynamic leaders have an idea of what they want done, but never communicate it clearly, leaving others trying to read their mind.

Not surprisingly, most employees are not good a reading other people’s minds. As a result, expectations are unfulfilled and everyone is unhappy. All because no one took the time to clearly define what needed to be done.

Like the old Fram® commercials where a grizzled mechanic says, “You can pay me now or you can pay me later,” up front time spent clarifying expectations saves hours of wasted effort.

2. For each of those jobs specifically state WHO is going to do WHAT by WHEN and HOW (or NOT HOW)?

Here is the blocking and tackling of delegation:

Choose the right person to give a project to (WHO), that is the person for whom a task is the best fit for their talent and ability. Specifically outline the parameters of the project (WHAT) and set reasonable deadlines for its completion (WHEN). Also set intermediate milestones toward the completion of those deadlines and check on those milestones faithfully, adjusting them if needed (also WHEN).

Finally determine the best practices that should be implemented to complete the project (HOW) and the methodologies that should be avoided entirely (NOT HOW).

Again, a little time spent at the beginning of a project—this should take LESS than an hour—reaps big rewards. Write everything down and distribute it to everyone on the project.

3. Provide the time and training for your people to excel at these jobs.

What passes for delegation in most businesses is really dumping. Or what I call “drive-by delegating” where leaders shoot people with a list of things to do and speed away to the next victim.

Effective business leaders view delegation as a process NOT an event. It is a process that takes time. Be patient with people and let them adjust to the learning curve of acquiring a new skill. It is also a process that takes training, giving people the tools they need to excel at what they do.

The problem is that we wait until the last minute—until we ourselves are utterly overloaded—before we ask for other people’s help. We then don’t have the time to adequately train our people. But time and training is critical for getting things done through others. Look into the future, even for a few months, and identify the jobs you might ask other people to do. Then get them started on learning those jobs.

In others words, stop dumping on your people in the name of delegation. Start developing them into the fully capable employees that they can be.

4. Follow-up each assignment politely, but religiously on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

Finally, you must follow-though on everything that you delegate. No exceptions. Inspect what you expect.

Don’t wait until the end of a project to inspect either. Check in at first daily just for a quick update. As you gain confidence that a project is well underway, have weekly times where you touch base. NEVER, however, let more than a month slip by without meaningful inspection of anything others are doing for you.

Accountability accelerates performance. Simple, polite, honest accountability creates a culture of execution within your company. “Follow-through is the cornerstone of execution, and every leader who’s good at executing follows though religiously,” Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done again advises.
